We are so thrilled to present Endometriosis: The Musical for its international debut here at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe! What started as an off-the-cuff idea back in 2019 has become the journey of a lifetime — ferrying this show from sweeping all three top awards at the 2022 Minnesota Fringe Festival, to a full-length run at Theatre in the Round in Minneapolis in 2025, to where you sit today.
This story is universal, but it's also very personal. Both my co-writer Kristin Stowell and I have endometriosis. Her diagnosis, the inspiration for this show, took 13 years. Mine took 27; I wasn't diagnosed until after the show had already been fully produced. Twice. This debilitating, full-body disease affects 1 in 7 people assigned female at birth, yet receives hardly any research funding. Many doctors have no idea how to properly diagnose or treat it.
There is no cure.
That's why we wrote this musical.
You might be wondering, "Can a chronic illness really be funny?" It has to be! Humor helps us survive.
So we hope you laugh, loudly and often. But we also hope you leave with a little more fire in your heart — to advocate for better research, more funding, and a healthcare system that truly sees and supports those who've been ignored for so long.
— Maria Bartholdi, Book & Lyrics
